The Ericson story began in 1936, when Arlo E. Ericson opened a small office on the Washington, CT town green. His goal was to sell insurance policies to local residents. In its early years, the business insured farms, mills, small businesses, local residents, and weekenders from New York City.
Success is based on enduring values.
Arloʼs friendly, professional and down-to-earth style appealed to the surrounding community, and his client base grew quickly. As he built the agency, Arlo focused on providing sound insurance advice with unparalleled service. He was also a strong believer in giving back to his community and putting family first. These core values shaped Ericson, then, and continue to guide us today.
In 1963, William M. Houldin, Jr., a marketing representative from Great American Insurance Company, joined the firm. Arlo passed away a few years later, leaving the firm in Billʼs capable hands. Throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, Ericson’s focus shifted from rural clientele to providing insurance services to affluent New York City residents who had weekend homes in Litchfield County.
A family business grows.
In 1987, William Houldinʼs oldest son, Scott, joined the firm, as did sons Spencer in 1991 and Peter in 1996. Billʼs wife, Nancy, soon filled the role of comptroller, and Ericson became a true family business.
William Houldin successfully retired in 2005, passing ownership to Peter and Spencer, who have continued a tradition of high service and community commitment, upholding values passed on from their father and Mr. Ericson.
It is said that “success breeds success.” That is particularly true in our case.
